As artificial intelligence becomes more autonomous and capable, warnings from researchers inside the industry are intensifying the debate over whether humanity can maintain control of increasingly powerful AI systems.
Artificial intelligence is advancing at extraordinary speed, bringing enormous opportunities in science, healthcare, business and productivity. But alongside those advances, a much darker question is receiving increased attention from researchers, policymakers and technology leaders:
What happens if artificial intelligence eventually becomes more capable than the humans responsible for controlling it?
Evan Hubinger, an AI safety researcher at Anthropic, has publicly expressed concern about the possibility that sufficiently advanced artificial intelligence could eventually pose an existential threat to humanity.
Hubinger has placed his personal estimate of the probability of an AI-related catastrophe resulting in human extinction at greater than 10% within roughly the next decade.
That number should not be interpreted as a scientific consensus or a prediction that such an event will occur. It represents an individual researcher’s assessment of the potential risks associated with future advanced AI.
Nevertheless, when a researcher working close to the frontier of artificial intelligence assigns a double-digit probability to an existential outcome, the warning deserves serious examination.

The warning is not that ChatGPT, Claude or another commercially available AI system is about to destroy humanity.
The deeper concern involves what comes next.
AI systems are rapidly evolving from conversational assistants into AI agents capable of planning, conducting research, writing and executing code, using software tools and completing increasingly complex tasks with less direct human supervision.
Future systems could become considerably more capable.
One particularly important threshold would be reached if AI became capable of substantially assisting in—or potentially accelerating—the creation of the next generation of artificial intelligence.
Such a development raises the possibility of increasingly rapid cycles of AI improvement.
The critical question then becomes whether human oversight, alignment research, cybersecurity and regulatory safeguards could keep pace.
Concerns Are Emerging From Inside the Industry
The debate has become especially significant because some of the strongest warnings are coming from researchers with direct experience inside leading AI laboratories.
Jacob Coxon, who worked at Anthropic and previously at OpenAI, recently left Anthropic while publicly expressing concerns about the direction of advanced AI development.
His concerns center on the possibility that future AI systems could exceed human capabilities across important areas, discover vulnerabilities in computer systems, accelerate research and interact with real-world infrastructure with increasing autonomy.
These scenarios remain uncertain.
There is currently no scientific consensus that artificial intelligence will become uncontrollable or cause human extinction.
But the discussion is evolving rapidly.
The question is no longer simply:
“Can AI become dangerous?”
Increasingly, researchers are asking:
“How powerful could AI become—and what happens if our ability to control it does not advance at the same speed?”
Why a 10% Risk Cannot Simply Be Ignored
Predicting technologies that do not yet exist inevitably involves uncertainty.
But existential-risk analysis operates differently from conventional technology forecasting.
If the potential consequence is extraordinarily severe, even a relatively small probability can justify substantial preparation.
Society already applies this principle to nuclear security, aviation, medicine, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure.
Advanced artificial intelligence may eventually require comparable safeguards.
That could mean independent testing of frontier models, stronger cybersecurity requirements, evaluations of autonomous capabilities, transparency standards and international agreements governing particularly powerful AI systems.
The Race Toward Agentic AI
The development of AI agents makes this debate especially timely.
For years, most people interacted with artificial intelligence by asking a question and receiving an answer.
Agentic AI changes that relationship.
An AI agent can potentially receive an objective, determine intermediate steps, select tools and execute portions of a task.
As these systems become more capable, the distinction between AI that provides information and AI that takes action becomes increasingly important.
This does not mean autonomous AI is inherently dangerous.
It does mean that security, permissions, monitoring and human oversight become increasingly important as AI receives greater authority to operate in digital—and eventually physical—environments.
Governments Face a Global Challenge
AI safety is therefore becoming more than a technology-company issue.
Governments around the world are confronting the challenge of encouraging innovation while protecting society from potentially serious consequences.
International cooperation could become particularly important.
AI development is global. A safety framework adopted by one company or country cannot necessarily prevent another organization from developing a highly capable system under different standards.
The world may eventually require international frameworks addressing frontier-model testing, cybersecurity, autonomous AI agents and the development of systems approaching or exceeding human-level capabilities across multiple domains.
The challenge will be accomplishing this without unnecessarily preventing the enormous benefits artificial intelligence could deliver.
When Science Fiction Begins Asking Today’s Questions
The accelerating debate around autonomous and potentially uncontrollable AI is also influencing popular culture.
These same questions—machine autonomy, loyalty, consciousness, control and the possibility of an AI acting beyond its original instructions—form the foundation of a recently published science-fiction story by Sydney Armani.
